Dhyâna. Original Sanskrit form of Chinese Ch'an and Japanese Zen. Literally means "contemplation", achieved through deep meditation and concentration of the mind on a single point. The work was commissioned by my friend and great violist Sviatoslav Belonogov. It was premiered in May 2007 during the 5th Festival of Contemporary Music of Caja Canarias in Tenerife (Spain). Dhyâna exploits the unique sonority of the viola d'amore merging it with inside-the-piano effects. Of rhapsodic nature, it is structured in a single movement. It employs mathematical models derived from number theory for motivic material. Formally, it is framed in acontinuous-development modified sonata form.
